Abstract

Although optical planar waveguiding layers had been fabricated and tested in the early 1960s [1], the subject entered a period of rapid expansion in the later years of that decade when the researchers [2,3] at Bell Telephone Laboratories coined the phrase ‘integrated optics’. This was arguably the most potentially far reaching monolithic system concept to emerge since the Silicon integrated circuit in the late 1950s.
