Calculating PWR Pressure Vessel Failure Frequencies

Probabilistic Methods in the Mechanics of Solids and Structures

Summary

In recent years there has been increasing interest in the use of probabilistic fracture mechanics to assess the integrity of nuclear pressure vessels. In this paper the intention of this technique is considered. Several of the underlying factors, crack incidence, ultrasonic inspection, fracture toughness and failure criteria, are examined for their effect on the failure frequency. Finally some conclusions are presented concerning the effectiveness of this technique.
