Abstract
Birth is more than just the physical beginning of a new life — it is also the start of a psychological development of the newborn infant together with his family. Very soon after delivery parents and infants can start to exchange signals, which may be of major importance for this development. Terms such as “bonding” and “attachment” have been used in a theoretical framework in an attempt to try and understand the processes that have really started much earlier.
