Abstract

Compared to the number of items published on tests for the hair, papers on methods relating to the scalp are few in number. There are two main reasons for this. On the one hand, the cosmetics industry finds it much easier to test the hair in vitro, than when it is attached to the scalp. On the other hand, cosmetic products such as shampoos, hair dyes, structural modifiers, stabilizers and conditioners have a much greater effect on the hair than on the scalp. With the latter, one can test most questions regarding tolerance, and also, again with reference to the hair, the secretion of sebum and dandruff formation, this being a separate area of interest. Hair growth and its control are yet another topic.
