Abstract

Many interesting physical systems undergo phase transformations to periodically ordered phases which are incommensurate with the underlying lattices, i.e. the wave vector describing the modulation cannot be formed by simple rational fractions of the reciprocal lattice vectors. The ordered structure may be a static charge density wave (CDW), a modulated lattice distortion, a spin density wave (SDW) or helical magnetic structure, or even a separate atomic lattice or “mass density wave” (MDW).
