Abstract

In this chapter the antibiotics are subdivided into those interacting with RNA polymerase from prokaryotic cells, and those interacting with RNA polymerases from eukaryotic organisms. The short introductory survey on prokaryotic and eukaryotic RNA polymerases is based on the reviews of BURGESS (1971), BLATTI et al. (1970) and KEDINGER et al. (1971). The protomeric form of RNA polymerase, which was first isolated from E. coli, contains the following polypeptide chain subunits: one β’ subunit; one β subunit; two α subunits; and one σ subunit. This RNA polymerase is designated as complete or holoenzyme (α2ββ’σ), which can be separated into two functional parts; a core enzyme (α2ββ’) which is able to synthesize RNA but lacks the ability to initiate RNA synthesis at specific points along the DNA chain and the sigma factor which acts catalytically and allows the initiation of RNA chains at specific sites.
