Abstract
Originally (at the beginning of the 1980s), functional insulin treatment was basically conceived of as substitution of insulin deficiency to achieve near-normal glycemia in type I diabetic patients. Many type II diabetic patients, however, soon showed an interest in this new form of therapy. Its two main advantages, the flexibility of food intake and the potential for immediate correction of hyperglycemia, are also relevant to type II diabetic patients who are treated with insulin, even though they are not insulin-dependent.
