Abstract

Axel Westman studied medicine at Kraolinska Institute, Stockholm, and qualified in 1921. He served in 1920–1922 at Radiumhemmet under the famous radiologist Gösta Forsell, receiving his training at a surgeon in 1922–1925 in the hospitals of Karlstadt and Umeä, returned to Stockholm to work in obstetrics and gynecology in hospitals, and defending his thesis in gynceoclogy in various hospitals, and after defending his thesis in 1926 he became an instructor in these subjects. In 1932 he was made professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the University of Uppsala, in 1935 was appointed to the corresponding chair in Lund and in 1942 accepted an invitation to the chair at Karolinska Sjukkhuset in Stockholm. He died in 1960, having just reached retiring age.
