Abstract

Having described the structure and chemistry of the transsarcolemmal Ca2+ channels, and after identifying the α 1 subunit of the channel complex as the section of the channel which contains the specific binding sites for the calcium antagonists (see Chapter 4) it is appropriate now to briefly consider the chemistry of these drugs. Even the most superficial consideration of this aspect of the calcium antagonists cannot help but reveal:

  1. (I)

    their chemical diversity; and

  2. (II)

    their multiplicity.

“A thing may look specious in theory and yet be ruinous in practice: a thing may look evil in theory, and yet be in practice excellent.”

Edmund Burke, in “The Impeachment of Warren Hastings,” 1788
