Zusammenfassung

Vigilanz wird üblicherweise als „gerichtete Aufmerksamkeit“, als „Reaktionsbereitschaft“ definiert. „Vigilia“ war die Nachtwache beim römischen Heer, später das Nachtgebet der Kleriker. Head verstand unter Vigilanz einen dynamischen Zustand der neuronalen Massenaktivität, der die Verfügbarkeit und den Organisationsgrad unseres adaptiven Verhaltens determiniert. Für Hansen (1992) stellt Vigilanz eine entscheidende Konstituente des Antriebs dar; Kugler definiert sie als die Bereitschaft des Individuums, auf einen inneren oder äußeren Reiz mit adäquatem Verhalten zu reagieren. Im Englischen hat sich dafür der Begriff „alertness“ durchgesetzt.
