Immunochemical Analysis of the Dogfish Subcommissural Organ

The Subcommissural Organ

Abstract

Several antisera against the subcommissural organ (SCO) and its ventricular secretion, Reissner’s fiber (RF), have been obtained over the last decade. These include polyclonal antisera against the bovine RF (Sterba et al. 1981, 1982; Rodríguez et al. 1984) and the SCO of bovine (Rodríguez et al. 1988) and chick embryo (Karoumi et al. 1990). Likewise, a number of monoclonal antibodies against the bovine SCO and RF have been developed (Meiniel et al. 1988; Rodriguez et al. 1991). However, to date, no antibodies against the SCO of lower vertebrates were available. The aim of the present work was: (a) to produce a polyclonal antiserum against the SCO of the dogfish, Scyliorhinus canicula, and (b) to characterize, at least partially, the molecular components of its secretory material. This species has been chosen because of its rather primitive position in the phylogenetic scale of the vertebrates, the conspicuous morphologic development of its SCO, and the fact that dogfish are commercially available, making it possible to obtain a large number of specimens for immunological and biochemical studies.
