Abstract

The basic concepts and requirements of condensed-matter studies employing positive and negative muons (μ +,μ ) or positive pions (π+) are briefly reviewed. As examples for the various experimental techniques and for their application to solid-state problems the paper discusses the determination of the sites of thermalized π+ or μ + in crystals by lattice steering (channelling or blocking), time-differential muon spin rotation (μ+SR) in transverse magnetic fields, radio-frequency μ+SR, and muon spin rotation of negative muons (μ SR) in semiconductors.
