Zusammenfassung
Im Zuge der gestiegenen Lebenserwartung sind die vorwiegend in höherem Alter auftretenden dementieilen Erkrankungen zu einem Gesundheits- und Versorgungsproblem ersten Ranges geworden. Die Epidemiologie hat zu ihrer Erforschung bisher v.a. deskriptive Daten beigetragen, mit denen sich ein maßstabsgetreues Abbild der Verbreitung des Demenzsyndroms in der Bevölkerung zeichnen läßt. Inzwischen liegen zahlreiche Untersuchungen vor, die trotz unterschiedlicher Fallkriterien eine hinreichend verläßliche Eingrenzung der Krankheitshäufigkeit erlauben.
