Abstract

We are interested in the two-locus system because some characters are determined by two loci and the understanding of this system is essential for the analysis of multilocus traits. The latter, which exhibit continuous or almost continuous variation, are of the greatest evolutionary significance. In view of our second motivation, it will be useful to devote Sect. 8.1 to establishing generalized Hardy-Weinberg proportions and deriving the recursion relations satisfied by the gametic frequencies for an arbitrary number of autosomal loci. We shall specialize our equations to two multiallelic loci and analyze this system in Sect. 8.2. In Sect. 8.3, examples that concern two diallelic loci will further elucidate two-locus behavior. Section 8.4 deals with two multiallelic loci in continuous time.
