Abstract

Poly A:Poly U is a biological response modifier consisting of the twin-chain RNA polymers polyadenylic and polyuridylic acids forming a synthetic polyribonucleotide complex. The compound is endowed with a variety of immunopharmacological activities on both the humoral and cellular components of the immune response and exhibits antitumor effects. To date, Poly A:Poly U has been administered to over 1,000 individuals and proven to be remarkably safe. Its beneficial effect has been documented in patients with surgically treated breast cancer after its administration following radiotherapy, and in gastric cancer patients in conjunction with chemotherapy. This presentation will focus on reviewing the main immunological activities of Poly A:Poly U with a special emphasis on cytokine production and interaction.
