Abstract

The hip is an intrinsically stable ball-and-socket joint encased in a thick capsule and surrounded by large muscles protecting it from injuries. Fractures or dislocations are rare in nonvehicular sports due to the lower energy level. These usually occur in motorized sports or in high-risk or high-speed activities such as hang-gliding and downhill skiing The hip joint is more often the site of stress fractures or spontaneously occurring inflammatory lesions which may be revealed in overuse conditions.
