Abstract
The morphological changes of the pancreatic ductal system in chronic alcohol-induced pancreatitis (AIP) usually follow a progressive course with the development of pancreatic duct stones, strictures and obstructions, and dilatation of the pancreatic duct [11]. There is a perception that these changes cause obstruction to the flow of pancreatic juice, leading to pancreatic duct hypertension and pain. Available data on the correlation between these changes and pain, however, do not substantiate this seemingly logical hypothesis. Patients with pancreatic duct strictures or obstructions (PDSOs) may or may not have associated duct dilatation and, conversely, pancreatic duct dilatation (PDD) may be unassociated with PDSO.
