Abstract
The discussion in the last chapter showed that in analysis of complex patterns a solution may require searching a graph or tree in a search space which is usually very large. The task is nearly hopeless unless the search space can be reduced. A powerful tool for constraining the number of alternatives and reducing the search space is the incorporation of knowledge.
