Micellar Effects on Xanthates Decomposition

Reactions in Compartmentalized Liquids

Abstract

The acidic decomposition of potassium ethylxanthate, butylxanthate and hexylxanthate was studied in micellar solutions of hexadecyl- tetradecyl- and dodecyl-trimethylammonium bromides and in micellar solutions of sodium dodecylfulfate. In micellar solutions of cationic surfactants the stabilization of alkylxanthates was observed. The same effect was found for potassium ethylxanthate in micellar solutions of the anionic surfactant. However, a catalysis of potassium hexylxanthate decomposition and the mixed effect /first inhibition, next catalysis/ of potassium butylxanthate decomposition were found. The results show the effects of electrostatic and dispersion forces. The posiibility of comicellization was considered and the quantitative analysis was started.
