Recombinant Inbred Mouse Strains: Models for Studying the Molecular Genetic Basis of Myeloid Tumorigenesis

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 149))

Abstract

Several inbred mouse strains have been derived that have a high spontaneous incidence of hematopoietic disease (reviewed by Gross 1983). Invariably, the high tumor incidence in these strains is causally associated with the expression of murine leukemia viruses (MuLV). Viruses expressed by these strains are inherited vertically, as normal Mendelian genes, or horizontally via infection of newborns through the mothers milk or of embryos, in utero. These viruses do not transform cells in culture and they do not carry oncogenes. They induce disease only after long latency periods, apparently by insertional activation of cellular genes (reviewed by Nusse, 1986).
