Summary

Extensive research and the treatment of 100 patients have demonstrated that a stabile positive transference is the most essential element in the psychotherapy of schizophrenics. Patients who were able to establish transference clearly improved. The establishment of transference is not spontaneous. In combination with psychotropics best results can be achieved with great sensitivity and varying techniques in a face to face setting. Psychotherapy sessions are less frequent than in the treatment of neuroses and need to be adjusted individually. Dream analysis and interpretation should be avoided as well as the interpretation of single symptoms. Theoretically, the psychotherapy of schizophrenics has shifted the emphasis from the theory of libido to the modern theories of narcissism.
