Abstract
The swelling of the cervix is caused by fiery blood: it is hard and retracted to the inserted finger and tender to the touch, and the fundus of the uterus is swollen and fierce pain spreads to the belly and the pubes, and the urine delays to flow. The lower back is all afire, nor do the faeces quit the bowel as usual. The groins and hips are heavy and febrile heat carries all kinds of ills from the groins throughout the body. There is headache, delirium, sweat in the lower parts, all kinds of shivering, swelling of the feet and knees: the pulse is firm and small and fainting heralds danger. A burning flow of subtle blood is the reputed cause, rotting within the vessels of the uterus, putting the ravaged body to the torch.
