Abstract
There are two main ways of carrying out folluw-up studies which try to relate perinatal events to outcome in the offspring. The first, which might be termed macroscopic, takes the broad-sweep approach, covering large populations, many data collectors and a rather limited number of specific categories of perinatal risk and childhood impairment. The United States Collaborative Project is the paradigm of this method. In the other approach, small samples of children are subjected to individual scrutiny, usually by those closely involved in their supervision. This is the method that I have chosen.
