Abstract
Sleep, which appears to be a critical component of circadian rhythms, is as a rule impaired by shift work. The sleep-wake cycle and other parts of the circadian system show interaction. There are differences in tolerance to shift work among subjects, depending, for example, upon the circadian phase structure, as in so- called morning and evening types.
