Abstract
This incident occurred in the center of London and the impact on the population of London was considerable. Kings Cross, which is the busiest Underground-station in London (with at least 200 000 persons passing through the station every day) has many intersections and there are three different underground systems passing through it, a mass of complex tunnels, and all joining onto the main-line station. On the evening of November 18, 1987, a fire started under the escalator from the Piccadilly Line to the main concourse, two-thirds of the way up. It is probable that some rubbish collected underneath the escalator and caught fire; this then spread to the wooden tread of the rather old-fashioned escalator, the wooden tread started to burn, and then the paint. There was a build-up of gases in the tunnel, and then what firefighters call a “flash-over”.
