Abstract

It was found a few years ago (1,2) in nanosecond laser photolysis studies of (carbonmonoxy)hemoglobin that significant religation is occuring during the first hundred nanoseconds following photodissociation of the complex in physiological conditions. This process was shown to be due to geminate recombination of photodissociated CO imprisoned in the protein. The same observation was made also for the isolated Hb subunits (3).
