Abstract

The work of Dr. Lenz (this volume) which proved the teratogenic effects of thalidomide in man, has had important consequences for drug evaluation. His work particularly provided a strong stimulus for the development of an international drug monitoring system as a means of preventing future disasters. These efforts started within WHO when the widespread occurrence of thalidomide-damaged babies began to become evident. As my presentation will deal with some experiences of the system which was devised, I will start with a short review of its development.
