Sensitivity to Treatment Effects of Evaluation Instruments Completed by Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Nurses, and Patients

  • Chapter
Assessment of Depression

Abstract

There is a widespread belief that psychiatric patients make unreliable informants, especially when it comes to rating the presence and severity of their psychiatric symptoms. Hence it is felt that symptom-rating scales completed by patients are likely to be less accurate and therefore less sensitive to treatment effects than comparable scales completed by psychiatrists or psychologists [1]. (Henceforth, psychiatrist or psychologist-rated scales will be referred to as doctor-rated scales.)
