Abstract

Edward Frankland reported the first organomercury compound, methyl-mercuric iodide (CH3HgI), in 1852 only three years after his discovery of the first organometallic compound [1, 2]. Several other organomercury compounds were discovered soon thereafter, but the accidental death of two of the co-workers of Frankland’s successor in 1865 and 1866 effectively brought a halt to activity in this field until the discovery of the mercuration of aromatic compounds by Dimroth [3] just before the turn of the century.
