The Most Ancient Rocks in the USSR Territory by U-Pb Data on Accessory Zircons

  • Conference paper
Archaean Geochemistry

Abstract

The early Precambrian formations in the USSR occur in the Baltic, the Ukrainian and the Aldan shields and were studied geochronologically using the U-Pb isotopic method on accessory zircons. It is only within the Ukrainian shield where the isotopic data confirm the existence of Lower Archaean formations. Supracrustal and associated granitoid formations of the Upper Archaean (2.9–2.6 Ga) were dated within all Precambrian shields of the USSR. The discovery of high-grade Archaean rocks as old as 3.4 Ga within the Omolon massif of the USSR Far East and their similarity to some Aldan formations gives hope to confirm, by isotope geochronology, the existence of an Early Archaean core within the Aldan shield.
