Abstract

To determine the risk factors of cervical dysplasia among Egyptian women, we studied 723 women (obtained Pap smears) over a period of one year. Nineteen percent of the women had cervical dysplasia. We found that women with cervical dysplasia tended to be older compared with the controls. In addition, we found that women with more than 3 children had 7.3 times the chance of acquiring cervical dysplasia while women with 1 to 3 children had only 3.7 times the chance compared with nulliparous women. We found no association between birth control technique, either pills or IUD’s, and the risk of aquiring an abnormal Pap smear. However among women who utilized birth control techniques, we found that those women using birth control techniques for more than one year had twice the risk of acquiring cervical dysplasia compared with one year users. We found no association between abortion and cervical dysplasia.
