Abstract

In the United States, deinstitutionalization has resulted in chroncially mentally ill residing in deplorable living conditions with little or no community support systems. Deinstitutionalization is “a process involving two elements: (1) the eschewal of traditional institutional setting for the care of the chronically mentally ill, and (2) the concurrent expansion of community-based services for the treatment of these individuals” (Bachrach, 1976).
