Cardiovascular Effects of a Graded Increase in ICP

  • Conference paper
Intracranial Pressure V

Abstract

In previous models of brain injury, we have found immediate and lasting reduction in cardiac output (CO) and stroke volume (SV) to near 50% of control (Brown 1980), (Levett 1980). These reductions occurred despite normal cardiac preload and afterload, which suggested that myocardial contractility was reduced. The present study was undertaken to determine how intracranial hypertension without primary brain injury might effect cardiac function.
