First Results with the “Thrust Plate” Total Hip Prosthesis

The Cementless Fixation of Hip Endoprostheses

Abstract

The concept of the “thrust plate” total hip prosthesis was first presented publically at SICOT in Kyoto by Huggler and Jacob in 1978. This cement-free prosthesis was designed to reproduce a physiologic mode of stress transfer to the proximal femur, thereby avoiding bone resorption and consequent loosening. Another great advantage is that there is no need to open the medullary cavity when the prosthesis is inserted. If revision becomes necessary, all conventional options for revisionary surgery remain open. Having improved certain details of the prosthetic design, and following testing and approval by our Ethical Committee, we implanted a series of 20 thrust-plate prostheses at the Balgrist Orthopedic Hospital in Zurich approximately 2 years ago. Here we shall report on our first clinical results with this system.
