Use of Prophylaxis

  • Chapter
Postoperative Thromboembolism

Abstract

In spite of the intensive scientific production in the field of thromboprophylaxis, comparatively little is known about its use in clinical practice. An American (Simon and Stengle 1974) and an English (Morris and Mitchell 1976a) survey among orthopedic surgeons, and an American survey among general surgeons (Conti 1980), revealed that only approximately half of the surgeons interviewed used any kind of thromboprophylaxis. The reply rate in these investigations was low, however, about 63%.
