Drainage of Paddy Soils in Taihu Lake Region

  • Conference paper
Proceedings of Symposium on Paddy Soils

Abstract

The fertility of paddy soils in the Taihu Lake region is relatively high(1–3). For example, the annual grain output in Wuxi County, Suzhou Prefecture of this region has topped more than 12 tons per hectare. These soils are heavy in texture and rich in nutrients. In the last decade these soils have been cultivated under a system of three crops a year with two crops of rice. Since then the duration of waterlogging has been prolonged, the water table rose and soil aeration worsened. It is now more important to apply field drainage installations to improve the physical conditions of these soils.
