Hormonal Regulation of Sex Expression in Plants

Abstract

The sex of plants is encoded in their genetic material and can be explained on the basis of the chromosome theory of sex inheritance. In most dioecious plants the female individuals have a pair of identical X chromosomes while the males have a pair of hetero-chromosomes, X and Y. In two typical dioecious plants, hemp (Cannabis sativa) and spinach (Spinacia oleracea), the main genes that determine sex are located in these chromosomes (1). Thus, the genetic control of sex determination in these plants is clear and beyond doubt.
