Abstract

The present generation of high resolution, fixed beam transmission electron microscopes is well capable of resolving spatial detail of 3 Å resolution in the axial Illumination, bright field image mode [1]. However, the structural information that can be obtained from images of biological specimens is presently limited to 7 Å resolution [2,3]. This limitation is due in the first instance to specimen damage that is caused by the irradiating electrons [4].
