Abstract

An increasing number of physicians is beginning to see an increasing number of aging patients with emotional disorders in their office practice, in hospital practice, and in long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes and homes for the aging. A rapid evaluation of the presence or absence and of the degree of functional psychiatric symptomatology among patients in this age group is important regardless of whether the emotional disturbance constitutes the principal problem of the patient or whether it coexists with one or more physical diseases.
