Zusammenfassung

Die Salze des Kations Lithium sind wegen ihrer besonderen physikalischen Eigenschaften in der klinischen Medizin schon relativ früh mit therapeutischer Absicht verwandt worden. Als erster versuchte Garrod (1859) die Gicht mit Lithium zu behandeln, weil Lithiumurat löslicher ist, als Kalium- und Natriumurat. Der Versuch schlug u.a. fehl wegen des ubiquitären Vorkommens von Na+ und K+ in allen Körperflüssigkeiten. Später hat man Lithiumsalze wegen ihres Geschmacks als Natriumersatz in kochsalzarmen Diäten anzuwenden versucht. Seit 1949 wird Lithium nach einer Erstbeschreibung von Cade als psychoaktives Agens bei Manien eingesetzt. Das Ergebnis war, daß Lithium heute einmal als gesichertes Therapeuticum und Prophylakticum zur Beeinflussung der manischen Depressionen gilt und daß man zum anderen z.T. Lithiumintoxikationen mit fatalem Ausgang beobachtete (Literatur und zusammenfassende Übersicht: Johnson, F.N., Lithium Research and Therapy. New York-London: Academic Press 1975).
