Porphyria Caused by Hexachlorobenzene and Other Polyhalogenated Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Abstract

The polyhalogenated aromatic hydrocarbons which cause the specific form of hepatic porphyria described in this Chapter are shown in Figure 1. Prolonged administration of these compounds to susceptible mammals and birds leads to the development, after a delay which varies between species but is usually at least a week, of massive overproduction of uroporphyrin and heptacarboxyhc porphyrin and, to a lesser extent, porphyrins with 6, 5 and 4 carboxyl groups.
