Abstract
There have been many recent comparative studies on the influences of temperature on the oxidative metabolism of whole organisms (Newell and Pye, 1968, 1970a, b; Newell, Ahsanullah and Pye, 1972; Newell, 1969) and of the oxidation rates of mitochondria, Newell and Walkey (1966), Newell and Pye (1971), Davison (1971), Lyons and Raison (1970), Raison, Lyons and Thomson (1971). Recent work has shown that in many species of ectotherms the resting or basal metabolism is relatively independent of acute temperature changes to a maximum temperature which was correlated with the maximum experienced by the organism in its environment (Newell and Northcroft, 1967; Newell and Pye, 1970). Such findings have also been supported by a study of the rates of oxygen consumption of cell-free homogenates and crude mitochondrial suspensions isolated from ectotherms, Newell and Pye (1970, 1971), Davison (1971).
