Cold Resistance and Freezing in Arianta arbustorum L. (Pulmonata)

  • Chapter
Effects of Temperature on Ectothermic Organisms

Abstract

The literature on cold resistance of molluscs deals almost exclusively with marine species (Kanwisher, 1955; Williams, 1970; Theede, 1972). Several marine lamellibranchs and gastropods tolerate the formation of ice in the tissues up to about 67% of their total water content. In freezing resistant intertidal molluscs this value is reached only at very low temperatures and after long periods of frost.
