Abstract

Inclusion of a chapter on tumor immunotherapy in this handbook may be premature or may reflect an optimistic assessment of its future clinical potential. However, the subject is relevant to a consideration of both antineoplastic and immunosuppressive agents because (a) immunotherapy is most effective as an adjunct to other modes of therapy which may be, or indeed may have to be, immunosuppressive and (b) it is likely that the therapeutic results obtained with drugs, x-irradiation, and/or surgery represent the end result, not only of their antitumor activity, but also the degree to which they do or do not affect the host’s immunologic response to residual tumor cells.
