Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to give an introduction to pattern recognition in the peripheral auditory system. The discussion is limited to the findings from experiments with mammals, since the inner ear in humans probably operates on the same principles. The superiority of the human auditory system can probably be attributed mainly to the fact that information transmitted by the auditory nerve can be processed much better in the central nervous system of humans.
