Zusammenfassung
In den photoautotrophen Organismen wird die solare Strahlungsenergie des sichtbaren Spektralbereiehes sowie angrenzender UV- und IR-Regionen2 in Freie chemische Reaktionsenthalpie △G umgewandelt und in Form stabiler chemischer Verbindungen gespeichert. Von der gesamten auf der Erdoberfläche auftreffenden Sonnenenergie (0,4–1 • 1022 kJ/Jahr) werden nur ca. 0,5% (2-4-1018 kJ/Jahr) gemäß Gl.(13.1) in der Photosynthese umgesetzt und damit der Biosphäre zugänglich gemacht, der überwiegende Teil wird als Wärmestrahlung in den extraterrestrischen Raum wieder abgegeben.

Die beiden großen von DeLuca bzw. Herring herausgegebenen Monographien geben einen exzellenten Überblick über den aktuellen Stand, wobei im wesentlichen alle Aspekte der Biolumineszenz berücksichtigt sind. Die Beiträge der wichtigsten Vertreter der auf dem Gebiet betriebenen Forschung sind in diesen beiden Bänden zu finden. Daneben sind einige Arbeiten aufgeführt, die sich mit den Anwendungen der Lumineszenz in biologischen und klinischen Laboratorien befassen.
Das von dem Verstorbenen E. Newton Harvey verfaßte Buch bietet immer noch eine der besten Einfuhrungen in die Vielfalt der in der Natur vorkommenden Formen.
