Abstract

During late acute Besnoitia infection of hamsters necrotic foci of the adrenal cortex may be seen that are as small as 1mm or less; these are irregular light brown areas which sometimes become confluent and may be accompanied by focal hemorrhage. During chronic Besnoitia infection the areas of discoloration are larger and may exceed the size of the normal hamster adrenal gland. Liver and spleen may become adherent to the adrenal (Fig. 519).
