Functional and Pathologic Interrelationships of the Pituitary Gland and Hypothalamus in Animals

  • Chapter
Endocrine System

Abstract

In the discussions to follow, statements are made which refer in general terms to the hypothalamus and the pituitary in most vertebrate species, including man. Examples are presented of pathologic alterations which have been studied in one or more species. In many instances, the biologic effects of a lesion in an endocrine organ of the living rat, mouse, or hamster are unknown. Knowledge of other species may be of value in this instance to predict the kind of biologic behavior which should be looked for in a laboratory rodent with a specific endocrine lesion. Specific differences in biologic behavior, frequency of occurrence, and other features will be discussed in the sections that are directed toward individual lesions in laboratory rodents.
