Abstract
In 1923*, Thorington and Schmidt [1] were stimulated to investigate the effects of increased intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) on renal function in a patient with malignant ascites whose urine output improved following paracentesis. In a subsequent canine study they demonstrated that the animals became oliguric at an IAP of 15–30 mmHg and anuric when IAP exceeded 30 mmHg.
