Abstract

The skin is one of the most common routes of entry of the brucella organisms to the body. However, this is not necessarily associated with skin manifestation of the disease. Cutaneous and soft tissue features of brucellosis were initially described by Bruce in 1889 when he noted the occurrence of purpuric skin rash in patients with active brucellosis. Hughes, in 1897, reported subcutaneous nodules as a feature of active brucellosis. Other authors have reported the skin manifestations of the disease (Hardy et al. 1929; Simpson and Fraizer 1929; Weber 1932; Harris 1950; Piulachs and Vidal-Barraquer 1951; McCullough 1955; Desmonts 1956; Rigatos and Kappos-Rigatou 1977; Young 1983; Salikhov et al. 1984; Trunnell et al. 1985; Abu Romeh et al. 1987; Al-Orainey et al. 1988; Lulu et al. 1988; Ariza 1989; Zuckerman et al. 1994; Bartralot et al. 1996; Madkour 1996; Madkour 1998; Hughes 1897). Because of their mild nature, cutaneous manifestations are commonly over-shadowed by other systemic and localised features of active brucellosis.
